Do I Need a Turnout Dose?
Technical Specialist Ciarán Lenehan asks whether a turnout dose is needed this spring, outlining when it is, or isn't.
The parasite we are worried about at this point is liver fluke - not that it will cause big problems in currently infected animals, but that live fluke going to grass inside animals' livers now will lay the eggs that will lead to problems in autumn '20.
Even in very small numbers, adult fluke will now be laying >100,000 eggs weekly that hit pasture via faeces.
When warm, mosit weather comes - we will have snail activity on pasture. If this faeces falls near these snails, we are potentially in trouble.
What animals might need it?
- Animals not treated for fluke at housing.
- Animals treated with an adult flukicide product at housing (immatures would've survived and now matured).
Take a faecal sample (pooled) from a group of animals and ask that a test for fluke be done. Alternatively, or if fluke are present, use an adult flukicide like Albex 10%, Rumenil or Animec Super (combination fluke and worm). This will ensure animals are 'clear' going to grass and reduce the chances of future fluke issues.
