There can be confusion around 'pour-on' wormers.
A 'pour-on' is not an active ingredient - it is a mode of administration.
There are currently five active ingredients available in a pour-on format (in the UK and Ireland at time of writing). There was a sixth up until recently, levamisole, but it has since gone off the market.
All of the current pour-on products contain actives in the clear wormer class. This class has efficacy against both internal and external parasites, unlike others.
Their effect against external parasites is broadest when used in their pour-on format. Efficacy against internal worms like lungworm or gastrointestinal worms does not differ when using pour-on or injectable forms of an active.
The current pour-ons on the market also have persistant activity against internal parasites, meaning they work on any larvae the animal ingests for weeks after treatment, as well as obviously killing parasites in the animal at treatment.
Pour-ons should be administerd in an even strip along the animal's spine from the shoulders to the hips. Avoid lesions and dirt with the product.
